Opening night! There's nothing like it, especially when it includes champagne and cake as it did last Friday night at Lakewood Theatre Company's premier of Lettice and Lovage. On a personal note, this play spoke to both my love of history and theatrics, tickled my funny bone, and made me resolve anew to add a bit of fun to life's mix whenever possible. The play's protagonist has been properly schooled in figuring out how to "Enlarge, Enliven and Enlighten" no matter the circumstance. In this case, our heroine's job as a tour guide in a Tudor manse is jeopardized as she creates madcap historical embellishments designed to convert lukewarm listeners into ardent audiences.
The result is living history and laughs all 'round. Lettice and Lovage runs through April 18, and will be followed by Curtains, a murder-mystery that is both a recent Broadway release and a Portland area premiere. The Clackamas Repertory Theatre kicks off its sixth season with The Ladies Man, billed as a "charming farce set in Belle Epoque Paris." Of great interest this season at CRT are the new semi-staged play readings of contemporary American playwrites. Talkbacks follow every reading, and last weekend's debut was confirmation that this format is a welcome addition to the boards. Join me, and take a seat for diverting evenings of high drama in Mt. Hood Territory. |
