Ready for "Oooo, Ahhhh" splash and gasp? Head out to the wild west town of Estacada the weekend of May 15 - 16 for the hugely fun Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival. This is the largest rafting and kayaking event on the West Coast. The festival features "Big Air" kayak jump competition, raft and kayak slalom races through the Clackamas River's Carter Rapids, river safety clinics, and even a Dutch oven cook off. Shop for state of the art whitewater schwag while you're taking a break from the races. Wash down a cold Strong Scotch Ale at nearby Fearless Brewing Companyto top off a mouth-watering day on the water.
Bagby Hot Springs feels great after a day on Cascade-fed waters, and the Mt. Hood National Forest is a hiker's dream. The great Outdoors and the exhilaration of wading into river games will make you want to dive into local camping options. You'll soon be happily pitching your tent under the stars in Mt. Hood Territory.
Canby, Colton, Clackamas, Estacada, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Oregon City, West Linn and Wilsonville all kick off their seasonal Farmers' Markets in the merry month of May. Nearly every day of the week, somewhere in the Territory, there is fresh produce to be had and a bumper crop of opportunity to chat up the farmers. Get your hands dirty with "Grow Your Own" workshops, Master Gardener Classes and Food Preservation Clinics. Markets take place in lakefront venues, under shady trees and in the neighborhood hum. Early May also brings peak wildflowers, ready for viewing at the Nature Conservancy's Camassia Natural Area, recently named "Trail of the Month" by Portland Monthly. Take on the "Search of Wild Mt. Talbert" hike on April 25 to learn more about native flora and fauna, then whistle while you walk your way to the "Songbirds of Mt. Talbert" event on May 15.
You know your mum-she'll love you no matter how you choose to celebrate Mother's Day, but - perhaps she'll love you a little more if plans include spending time with her. A backroads bicycle trip demonstrates that you see her as fit and fun, while Philip Foster Farm's pioneer brunch shows that you remember all those hours she helped with homework.
