August gets it right out of the chute with the two-day Ross Coleman Invitational. This Professional Bull Riding event has teamed up again with Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oregon to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions while rounding up top-notch competitors and bodacious barrelmen. These folks show fans in the stands a good time from the first-go to the Gold Buckle. The Invitational has partnered with local lodging for special overnight rates, so reserve now for the weekend of August 6 - 7. Carve out your own adventure just down the road from the Buckeroo grounds by riding single track in the Molalla River Recreation corridor. Thrill seekers will jump for joy at nearby Skydive Oregon, where an airborne plunge guarantees an adrenaline rush and a clear 360 of the Willamette Valley's vineyards, sparkling Mt. Hood and the marine blue of Oregon's coastal range. Wind down by making tracks to Snowline Tree Farm. Get the taste of a SummerYule afternoon by riding on the red tractor, taking a picnic basket to the pond and chatting with the Greif family. Learn how different varieties of Christmas trees are shaped and harvested. You can even pre-select your tree now for pick up between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

To paraphrase an old proverb, A life without love is like a year without summer - on Mt. Hood. Not only is this a glorious season for outdoor recreating such as hiking, camping, bicycle touring and summer skiing, this is the time of year when our mountain communities shine with special events that make for rich traveling tales. Campers easily tune into the USFS interpretive programs ranging from wildflower hikes to Star Parties at Timberline Lodge. The younger set will be fully catered to at both Smokey the Bear's 66th birthday bash and on Jr. Forest Ranger Day. Lovers of 1920s-40s vintage log cabins will want to mark their calendars well in advance of the once-a-year Steiner Cabin Tour and New Mountain Lodges tours. The Mt. Hood Huckleberry Festival and Barlow Trail Days prove to be the pick of the crop for travelers who can't get enough of authentic salmon bakes, folk music and Native American tales. The whole tribe can stay close to the action with one of the diverse Vacation Rentals that dot the mountain landscape. Sweethearts will like nothing better than indulging in first-class pampering at The Resort at The Mountain, where the "Simply to Dine For" package is scrumptious!

Each August, the best-kept secret on Mt. Hood, the Arts Cabins, host Blacksmith Week. Blacksmiths from across the country hotfoot it to this event, where they demonstrate, share knowledge and sell their hand forged work. If graphic arts are more your style than iron mongering, multi-day workshops that range from painting to printing are offered through the autumn months. Timberline Lodge is just up the road, a WPA-era icon that continually inspires travelers appreciative of hand-crafted elegance. Stay overnight, take a self-guided tour, and amplify your memories with a dinner prepared by Timberline's new chef, Jason Stoller Smith. Stoller Smith recently added to his resume by serving as guest chef at the White House summer picnic. When was the last time someone who cooked for the Commander-in-Chief cooked for you?

When travels take you to Greater Portland, carve out time for the Mary S. Young Park Arts Festival in the Forest. Headliners include the A-WOL Dance Collective tree dancers, live Blues music, and Zydeco tunes. Take a guided nature hike, get creative with your kids at one of the children's art stations or be the highest bidder at the silent Art Auction. The cost of admission is free all weekend long, and Mary S. Young State Park is one of Oregon's Mt. Hood Territory's natural gems. After pARTying well into the evening, rest your sleepy self at one of our B&Bs or hotels.

Cheeseburgers in Paradise may or may not get your grill going, but summer concerts down by St. Josef Winery's pretty pond will absolutely set your toes tapping. AlexEli Vineyards hits their stride with Sunday jazz in the outdoors, and the indie-roots festival Pickathon brings music lovers from across the country to this three day outdoor musical party.

The City of Sandy boasts open air Main Stage concerts each Wednesday in Meinig Park. Get in the swim of things at Lake Oswego's Sundae Summer Concerts, then check out the Hilton Garden Inn or the Lakeshore Inn for one of their dog-gone good deals. Check out one of Oregon's top 10 attractions when you visit Bullwinkle's Family Fun Center, as July and August feature a bumpercar full of special summer savings.

This summer I have been taken by storm with a shocking urge to merge with my garden. The rewards includes spiky blue green grasses, glossy-leafed strawberry plants and radiant-faced flowers. No matter how proud I am of my fledgling garden however, I am hard pressed to find more vibrant hues, shapes and sizes of gaily-garbed floral fields than at the Swan Island Dahlia Festival, open from  August 28 - September 6. This is the nation's largest dahlia festival, and I always return home with astounding photos and a bushel of inspiration for the next planting season. I have friends who recently took the Canby Ferry Classic, encouraging me to make the outing by bicycle this year. Speaking of, this is the last month to enter to win a trip to Oregon's Mt. Hood Territory by entering our Bike On! sweepstakes. I hope to see you around the Territory.
